6 Best Caribbean Beaches Without Sargassum Seaweed In 2023

Sargassum seaweed in Mexico and the Caribbean has been taking over the beaches and ruining vacation plans for many travelers in recent years, and things aren’t going to get any better in 2024.

We’ve compiled a list of Caribbean beaches that have historically not been affected by the seasonal sargassum blooms to help you with your travel plans.

Current seaweed situation in the Caribbean in 2024

The 2024 seaweed season has been mild so far in the Caribbean. Most places that are invaded every year are reporting less sargassum this season. The reason behind this is probably the lower than normal sea temperatures at this time of year, but this is currently changing and more seaweed supplies are expected.

Seaweed reporting, stay informed

If you are still considering vacationing in the seaweed area and want to stay informed about the sargassum situation in those areas, we encourage you to join our reporting groups on Facebook:

Eagle, Palm and Baby Beaches in Aruba

Aruba, a Dutch Caribbean island, is known for its fine white sand beaches, lavish resorts and refreshing breezes. The well-known beaches, including Eagle Beach, Palm Beach and Baby Beach, are fortunately outside the hurricane belt and the sargassum seaweed belt.

Grace Bay Beach in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands

One of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Grace Bay Beach offers crystal clear sea water and incredibly soft sand. This long coastline is particularly tranquil because it is protected by a barrier reef. At Grace Bay Beach the water bottom is pristine and smooth.

If you’re looking for a seaweed-free Caribbean beach for a family, couple or group vacation, Grace Bay in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, is undoubtedly a place to consider.

Playa Porto Mari on Curacao, Caribbean Netherlands

One of the most beautiful beaches in Curaçao is also one of the most beautiful algae-free beaches in the Caribbean. Playa Porto Mari, a private beach on the west coast of Curacao, charges an entrance fee (visit the Porto Mari website for hours and prices), but the costs also include access to various amenities.

Morne Rouge beach in Grenada

The island of Grenada has a beautiful, seaweed-free coastline with crystal clear water. Although it is less known than Grand Anse Beach and is also called BBC Beach, Morne Rouge is hardly affected by Sargassum algae.

Families in particular like to swim here because of the calm sea. If you’re looking for a family-friendly Caribbean beach without seaweed, Morne Rouge is an excellent choice.

Grand Anse in St. Georges, Grenada

Sargassum seaweed has not yet invaded Grenada’s beautiful Grande Anse coast. Aside from its beautiful beaches, Grenada is a popular Caribbean destination thanks to its artisanal rum farms, organic bean-to-bar chocolate, and mountains dotted with waterfalls.

Beaches on the Caribbean side of Colombia

Best beaches in Colombia

Colombia’s Caribbean coast boasts some of the cleanest beaches, especially notable during seaweed season where such problems are minimal.

Beaches like Playa Blanca in Barú, the pristine sands of Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona and the serene Isla de San Andrés are known for their clear water and well-maintained banks.

Ideal for travelers looking for tropical getaways without the usual inconveniences of seaweed buildup, these beach spots provide perfect places to swim, sunbathe and enjoy the natural beauty of the Caribbean.

Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres sees the first arrival of Sargassum on the most popular beach

If you really want to go to the Caribbean coast of Mexico, there are still a few beaches that do not have Sargassum algae. Sargassum tides are likely to hit the exposed east coast, but some beaches, such as Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres Island in Quintana Roo, are usually free of seaweed. However, much depends on the wind and sea currents.

Secret beach Belize

Belize is home to many beautiful beaches, but there is one that stands out from the rest Secret beach. As the name suggests, this beach is hidden from the crowds and is a secluded spot that is perfect for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It also seems that this amazing place is a secret to Sargassum, because you won’t find it there.

The Secret Beach is not only a perfect place to relax and unwind, but it is also an ideal spot for water sports enthusiasts. Snorkeling, paddle boarding and kayaking are just some of the activities you can enjoy on this beach.

Little Bay Beach, St. Maarten

Little Bay Beach is generally in pristine condition all year round.

This small island is divided between Dutch and French territories and has 37 beautiful beaches spread over 34 square kilometers. Sargassum can be an occasional problem, especially on the east coast.

Little Bay Beach on the south side of the island, just minutes from the capital Philipsburg, is an excellent choice if you are looking for a seaweed-free beach on St. Maarten.

Due to its location on a remote peninsula and the protection provided by rock outcrops on both sides, it is rarely affected by sargassum seaweed.

Southernmost tip of Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda

Although the opulent St. James Club on Antigua’s eastern windward side had to close for three months in 2019 due to a huge wave of Sargassum seaweed, numerous other Antiguan beaches often have no sargassum seaweed.

Curtain Bluff Resort is located on the southernmost tip of Antigua, on two beaches in a private setting where little seaweed arrives.

Amenities at the 72-room boutique resort include an all-inclusive fine dining restaurant, tennis, squash, sailing, guided snorkeling excursions and sea kayaking.

Playa PortoMari, Curacao, Caribbean Netherlands

Known as a top summer getaway, Curacao draws travelers with its beautiful beaches and notable amenities, and Playa PortoMari stands out among them.

High on the list of popular destinations in Curaçao, this beach is renowned for its vibrant marine ecosystem, well-designed facilities and fascinating natural splendor. Divers are drawn to the awe-inspiring double reef, while snorkelers can follow trails that reveal a series of reef formations teeming with fascinating ocean creatures.

Bloody Bay and Long Bay Beaches in Negril, Jamaica

Hidden Gem of Negril features Bloody Bay and Long Bay, oases of natural beauty distinguished by remarkable sargassum seaweed-free beaches.

They are idyllic havens where beach lovers can enjoy crystal clear waters and powdery sand without the intrusion of seaweed.
