A 13-year-old boy charged with fatally shooting a 60-year-old man on an RTD bus in January pleaded guilty to manslaughter and attempted first-degree murder, the Denver District Attorney’s Office said.
The boy, who has not been identified because he is a juvenile, was charged with first-degree murder after fatally shooting Richard Sanchez on the night of Jan. 27 on an RTD bus near South Federal Boulevard and West Mississippi Avenue.
The boy shot Sanchez after a two-minute encounter on the bus that began when the boy and two other juveniles boarded the bus and walked down the aisle past Sanchez, whose leg was extended into the aisle, according to an arrest affidavit.
The boy “exchanged words” with Sánchez as the group stepped or jumped over his leg, and Sánchez then walked up to the group and confronted them in the back of the bus. The boy then shot Sanchez several times and stepped over Sanchez’s body to exit the bus.
Sánchez was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The 13-year-old initially faced 14 charges, including first-degree murder, assault, endangering a public transportation crew and possession of a firearm as a minor.
He pleaded guilty in juvenile court on June 6 to first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. The Denver District Attorney’s Office spokesman Matt Jablow said in an email. He will be sentenced on July 18.
