Temperatures soar into the 30s, but you’re never far from an air-conditioned hotel, an award-winning restaurant or a sprawling spa to cool you off. There’s plenty to keep you busy too, from the Burj Al Arab (the tallest hotel in the world) to endless golden beaches and traditional souk-style shops.

The Canary Islands are popular with Europeans for good reason: it is the continent’s most reliable option for winter sun. Tenerife, the largest island in the archipelago, is known as the ‘Land of Eternal Spring’. The temperatures are certainly not sweltering, but you can certainly get away with wearing short sleeves. You can enjoy the most hours of daylight in Europe and you only have to worry about two days of rain.

3. Mauritius

Maximum temperature: 29 C/84 F

Mauritius only gets warmer in November after a cool winter, and the rainy season usually lasts until December. Located off the east coast of Africa, the volcanic island experiences opposite seasons to Northern Europe, making it the ideal winter sun destination. It is perfect beach weather, with daytime temperatures of 29 C and pool-warm sea water of 25 C. You will enjoy long days of 13 hours with an average of eight hours of sunshine. It is also a great month for divers, especially if you like to spot turtles.

4. Turkey

Maximum temperature: 20 C / 75 F

Just because you’re looking for winter sun doesn’t necessarily mean you want to get sunburned on the beach. If you want to warm your bones for a cold and dreary winter, Turkey is an excellent option. In Istanbul the average temperature is around 15 degrees Celsius, a much more comfortable temperature for sightseeing than in the summer months. On the Mediterranean coast and on the Turkish Riviera, temperatures are generally warmer, with highs around 20 C. Perhaps not exactly sunbathing and swimming weather, but ideal for outside dinners and more comfortable walks.

5. Bali (Indonesia)

If only a tropical escape will do, consider Bali. With temperatures soaring below 30 degrees, November is one of Bali’s hottest months. It is also still considered off-season, meaning you can spend luxurious holidays at a fraction of the price. Although it is rainier than in July and August, the peak of rain does not begin until December. It’s popular with everyone from surfers and backpackers to honeymooners, so it’s a common tourist trail, but there are also quieter spots to escape to. Theme parks will undoubtedly be less crowded, but Florida has more to offer than just Orlando. Head south to Miami, where the average temperature is 27 degrees Celsius, or head to Bonita Springs for some barefoot beach luxury.
