Trump rally shooting

A gunman fired multiple shots at the stage as former President Trump held a campaign rally in western Pennsylvania on Saturday evening. Trump suffered minor injuries to his right ear. The Secret Service surrounded him and quickly removed him from the stage after Trump, with a bloody face, shook his fist defiantly.

Trump later said on his Truth Social site that he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

Two people are said to have been killed, including the suspected shooter.

Authorities identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Pennsylvania as the shooter. They’re trying to figure out a motive.

The incident is being investigated as an assassination attempt.

Top Republicans and Democrats, including President Joe Biden, quickly denounced the attack and political violence in general. They praised the quick response of the Secret Service, wished Trump’s recovery and urged calm. Biden spoke with Trump after the incident, the White House said Sunday evening.

The Republican National Convention is this week and Trump is expected to name his running mate in the coming days.

Trump’s chances of retaking the White House have risen to 66% on PredictIt from about 60% before Saturday’s shooting. Before the first presidential debate, it was about 53%.

Nasdaq still expanding

On Wednesday, the Nasdaq closed 9% above its 50-day line, the tightest since June 2023, raising the risk of a pullback. After Thursday’s plunge and Friday’s modest rebound, the Nasdaq is 6.9% above its 50-day high, still extended.

With optimism high and the Nasdaq under pressure, the risks of a pullback are higher as tech earnings materialize. That could be a toxic mix.

Analysis of the market rally

The Nasdaq is extended, while earnings season will be a major X-factor in the coming weeks. Taiwan Semi and ASML in particular could swing with techs in the coming week. But for now it’s broad progress, with a number of stocks showing buy signals.

Please note that not all stocks will participate. Restaurant stocks have suffered heavy damage in the past week. Social media plays had a rough few days. Be prepared to weed out losers and laggards when new buying opportunities arise.

The possible assassination attempt on Trump further underlines that the 2024 election season is a major wild card.

One downside to a broad market rally? Your watchlists need to be a lot bigger. So do your homework.
