BBC's Huw Edwards accused of making indecent images of children

Former BBC News presenter Huw Edwards has reportedly been charged with making indecent images of children.

According to a BBC news report, Edwards, the presenter chosen to break the news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death in 2022, has been charged with three counts.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said this Variety: “Huw Edwards, 62, of Southwark, London, has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children following a Met Police investigation. The facts, which are said to have taken place between December 2020 and April 2022, relate to images shared on a WhatsApp chat. Edwards was arrested on November 8, 2023. He was charged on Wednesday, June 26, following the consent of the Crown Prosecution Service. He has been bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, July 31. The media and public are strongly reminded that this is an active case. Nothing may be published, including on social media, that could prejudice future legal proceedings.”

Edwards resigned from the BBC in April on ‘medical advice’ after a 10-month absence. He first took a leave of absence after being accused of paying a teenager for sexually explicit photos.

Before the scandal, Edwards was one of the most senior on-air presenters at the BBC and the fourth highest-paid person, having spent 40 years with the corporation. After news of the MMS broke, Edwards’ wife Vicky Flind said her husband had “severe mental health issues” and had been admitted to hospital for treatment.

A BBC spokesperson declined to comment.
