The Prince’s Trust has teamed up with medical imaging IT and cyber security company Sectra to launch a new initiative aimed at widening access to technology careers for young people from diverse backgrounds.

The programme, entitled ‘Get into IT and Administration’, was introduced in Belfast this summer and focuses on providing a clear route into the technology sector for under-represented groups.

This digital and technology-focused employability program has already supported its first intake, providing participants with real-world exposure to the health tech industry. The initiative provides practical support including help with CV writing, technical training and insights into industry opportunities. In addition, direct career paths, such as internships at Sectra, are made available to successful participants.

Yousif, one of the first participants in the program, shared his experience: “The hands-on experience and exposure to real-world challenges showed me how impactful and rewarding a career in this field can be. The Sectra team was incredibly knowledgeable and supportive, and it was inspiring to see how they use technology to make a difference in the world.”

Other young people who took part in the program noted the increase in self-confidence, the development of practical skills and the creation of networking opportunities that will benefit their future careers. Lauren, another participant, said: “This experience has made me very excited about possible future prospects in technology. If you get the chance to get an education, I’d say go for it. You gain new experiences and meet new people.”

Over the past two years, The Prince’s Trust has helped more than 2,000 young people engage with digital and technology employability programs. Despite this success, The Trust recognizes that inequality persists and is committed to reaching more disadvantaged communities. The collaboration with Sectra is seen as an essential part of this mission.

Julia Beaumont, Chief Technology Officer at The Prince’s Trust, emphasized the importance of such collaborations: “Through our partnership with Sectra, we can challenge existing perceptions and inspire young people from all backgrounds to consider a career in the digital and technology space. regardless of the barriers they may face. It is vital that governments, businesses and charities unite to provide young people with employability training, career opportunities and the technical skills that are vital in today’s job market.”

Jane Rendall, Managing Director of Sectra in Britain and Ireland, echoed these sentiments: “We have been hugely impressed by the energy and enthusiasm of the individuals taking part in our initiative with The Prince’s Trust. Healthcare technology companies have the opportunity and responsibility to embrace diversity in their workforce by recruiting people from the communities in which they have the privilege to serve. This program is an example of how to put that into practice, and it is a fantastic opportunity to enable more young people to reach their potential in an industry that touches the lives of so many.”

This partnership between The Prince’s Trust and Sectra is an important step towards creating more inclusive opportunities in the technology industry, equipping young people with the skills and confidence they need to thrive in the digital world of today.
