Fourteen Aurora schoolchildren and a bus driver were safely evacuated after a school bus caught fire Wednesday afternoon, according to Aurora Fire Rescue officials.
Firefighters responded to a school bus “heavily engulfed in flames” near East 11th Avenue and North Picadilly Road around 4 p.m., the department said in a news release.
Firefighters confirmed that all children were evacuated safely and unharmed before connecting to fire hydrants to extinguish the fire.
In a statement, firefighters praised the quick actions of the bus driver and firefighters.
“When he noticed fire coming from the dashboard when he turned the bus, he immediately stopped and helped evacuate the children. His quick and courageous actions were critical to ensuring the safety of everyone,” Aurora Fire Rescue said in a statement Wednesday evening.
Fire investigators determined the fire was accidental and started in the engine compartment.
