Players leaving a club can create uncertainty in the starting line-up, but it can also demonstrate a manager’s confidence in the options still available to them. For Crystal Palace, that’s one way of looking at things following the departure of Joachim Anderson, who returns to Fulham where he spent the 2020/21 season on loan. In a way, it’s a loss for the Eagles. In another sense, it’s quite an opportunity for American centre-back Chris Richards.

Richards joined from Bayern Munich at the start of the 2022-2023 season, but due to injuries and the depth of the squad, it took almost an entire season for him to become a regular under Oliver Glasner. As he enters his third season at the club, Richards’ play will be key to Palace’s defensive fortunes.

With experience across defense and midfield, there isn’t much Richards hasn’t seen in the game despite being only 24. At the end of last season, Richards discussed how Palace’s mentality is different under Glasner and it shows in his play. It may have been a disappointing summer for Richards, with the United States crashing out of the Copa America at the group stages, but that’s another moment for growth.

Richards is now a first-choice centre-back for his club and country and will have the expectations that come with that. It’s nothing he can’t handle, but it shows the growth he has made since joining Crystal Palace. As Newcastle United pursue Marc Guehi, Richards could become the heart of the Palace defense, which would be quite an achievement.

A lot is riding on his performances as Crystal Palace face a new-look West Ham United this weekend. Potential incoming USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino will be keeping an eye on Richards as he could tangle with new West Ham striker Niclas Fullkrug in a clash that will test his strength.

Such clashes happen every week in the Premier League, and they are moments where young players can improve. As Richards continues to grow and gain confidence, there is no limit to how high he can go and conquer Crystal Palace as his importance increases by the day.
