New Jersey company expands recall of lead-contaminated cinnamon

Gutierrez Distributor of Passaic, NJ, has expanded its ground cinnamon recall to include the Gutierrez brand, in addition to the El Servidor Corp. brand.

The cinnamon has been found to be contaminated with elevated levels of lead.

If a child is exposed to enough lead for an extended period of time (e.g., weeks to months), permanent damage to the central nervous system can occur. This can lead to learning disabilities, developmental disabilities, and other long-term health problems. In adults, chronic lead exposure is associated with renal dysfunction, hypertension and neurocognitive effects.

Short-term exposure to very low levels of lead may not cause any symptoms. It is possible that elevated blood lead levels are the only clear sign of lead exposure. Additional signs and symptoms of lead exposure are more likely with acute exposure to higher levels of lead or chronic exposure to lead.

Although lead can affect almost any body system, its effects depend on the amount and duration of lead exposure and age/body weight.

Ground cinnamon from El Servidor Corp was distributed to stores in New York beginning January 14, 2024. Gutierrez brand ground cinnamon was sold to cash and carry customers.

The product comes in a 1.5 ounce clear plastic bag.

The recall was the result of a sample analysis conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, which found that the product contained elevated levels of lead. The company has halted production and distribution of the product as FDA notices and the company continues its investigation into the cause of the problem.

Consumers should immediately discontinue use of the product and are urged to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions can contact the company at 973-777-1851.
