Brazil nuts recalled due to mold and yeast

Now Foods of Bloomingdale, Illinois, is recalling Now Real Foods whole and unsalted raw Brazil nuts due to high mold, yeast and total viable content in the product.

According to the details published online by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), the recall was initiated on August 14, 2024 and is still ongoing.

Recalled products were distributed nationwide and in Singapore.

About mold in food

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), mold in food can pose serious health risks. Some molds cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems, while others produce mycotoxins under certain conditions: poisonous substances that can lead to diseases. Mold root threads can penetrate deeply into foods, especially those with a high moisture content, making it unsafe to simply cut off the moldy part. The USDA recommends throwing away moldy foods, especially soft fruits, vegetables and meats, to avoid potential health risks. Proper food storage and regular inspection are critical to prevent mold growth and ensure food safety.
