Universal Studios Hollywood streetcar crashes, injuring 15

Fifteen passengers were injured in a streetcar crash at Universal Studios Hollywood on Saturday evening, authorities said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department units were dispatched to the theme park shortly after 9 p.m. PT, the department said in a social media post. A total of fifteen people were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The streetcar’s last car struck a rail as it traveled down a hill near a parking garage, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Maria Abal told police. Los Angeles Times.

“There was a problem with the brakes,” Abal said. “We don’t know exactly what yet.”

In a statement to Varietya spokesperson for Universal Studios Hollywood confirmed that “there was a tram incident at the theme park this evening that resulted in multiple minor injuries.”

“We are working to support our guests and understand the circumstances leading to the accident,” the spokesperson added.

Universal Studios has not provided any further details at this time. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, fire officials said.

Universal Studios Hollywood operates multi-car trams for the world-famous Studio Tour. The hour-long tour takes visitors behind the scenes of the Universal Studios lot, where movies and television shows like “Nope,” “Back to the Future,” “Desperate Housewives,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and more were filmed . The ride is also known for King Kong 360 3D, one of the world’s largest 3D experiences, and the ‘Jaws’ shark attack. Universal Studios Hollywood will celebrate the attraction’s 60th anniversary starting next week.
