'A short but beautiful run'

Author and journalist Shea Serrano’s coming-of-age comedy “Primo” has been canceled after a one-season run on Freevee. Serrano, who created the series and served as executive producer, shared the news on social media Tuesday, two days after the sitcom’s one-year anniversary on the Amazon AVOD streamer.

“A short but sweet series – unfortunately we won’t be making any more episodes of ‘Primo,'” Serrano said. “I will always be indebted to everyone who worked on the show to make it so great and I will always be grateful to everyone who watched it and championed it – thank you very much – long live ‘Primo.’”

According to an official logline: “The single-camera coming-of-age comedy, inspired by Serrano’s life growing up in San Antonio, Texas, follows Rafa Gonzales (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio), a 16-year-old raised wide-eyed by his smart-aleck mother, Drea (Christina Vidal), and his five overbearing uncles Rollie (Johnny Rey Diaz), Mike (Henri Esteve), Ryan (Ryan Santos), Jay (Jonathan Medina), and Mondo (Efrain Villa) as they live their living on the south side of San Antonio.”

Variety previously reported that “Primo” was developed in 2021 when Freevee was still called IMDB TV. When news broke that the streamer had given the green light, Serano compared the moment to “when Spurs won the 2014 title after having their hearts broken in the 2013 finals.”

Other cast members on “Primo” included Stakiah Lynn Washington, Nigel Siwabessy and Mimi Fletcher. Michael Schur, David Miner, Morgan Sackett, Peter Murrieta and Lisa Muse Bryant served as executive producers. Amazon Studios and Universal Television produced.
