If you were bummed that you wouldn’t be able to take a dip in the Aurora Reservoir on Independence Day after the city announced it had closed the water body due to elevated bacteria levels, we have good news for you.
City officials told Denver7 Thursday morning that the swimming beach would reopen for the July 4 holiday after tests conducted earlier in the day confirmed that levels of E. coli in the water had decreased from the high levels seen the days before measured.
The elevated bacteria levels in the water were identified as E. coli by Rory Franklin, spokeswoman for the city of Aurora, who told Denver7 that because the reservoir is an untreated, natural body of water, it is not unusual for bacteria levels — such as E. coli – fluctuate in the water from time to time.
“As with any untreated, natural water, levels of certain bacteria fluctuate. It heals itself naturally, but if levels are elevated it is best not to swim,” city officials said in a news release Wednesday.
