Bessie Carter Cast as Nancy Mitford in Historical Drama 'Outrageous'

The upcoming period drama ‘Outrageous’ has found its Mitford Sisters.

The six upper-class Mitford sisters – Nancy, Diana, Unity, Jessica, Deborah, Pamela – were the Kardashians of the 1930s, when they both dazzled and scandalized English society.

Nancy was a writer who wrote novels including ‘The Pursuit of Love’, while Diana and Unity were fascists close to Hitler. Jessica was a communist, Pamela lived the second half of her life with a woman and Deborah became a duchess after her marriage.

Bessie Carter (“Bridgerton”) plays Nancy, Joanna Vanderham plays Diana, Shannon Watson (“The Jetty”) plays Unity, Zoe Brough (Casualty) plays Jessica, Orla Hill (Stonehouse”) plays Deborah and Isobel Jesper Jones (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”) joins as Pamela.

Toby Regbo (“Belgravia: The Next Chapter”) will play their brother Tom, while Anna Chancellor (“My Lady Jane”) and James Purefoy (“The Veil”) will play the siblings’ mother and father.

The cast is completed by Joshua Sasse (“Love is in the Air”) as Oswald Mosley, Jamie Blackley (“Becoming Elizabeth”) as Peter Rodd, James Musgrave (“Einstein and the Bomb”) as Hamish Erskine, Calam Lynch (“ Bridgerton”) as Bryan Guinness and Will Attenborough (“Our Girl”) as Joss.

“Against the gathering storm clouds of the 1930s, masked by the decadence, frivolity and opulence of British high society, ‘Outrageous’ will bring to screen for the first time the full, uncensored story of the Mitford sisters – a story about family ties and betrayal, public scandals, political extremism, love, heartache and even prison time,” the synopsis reads.

The six-part series, which will air on UKTV and Britbox International in 2025, is already in production. Sarah Williams (“Small Island”) wrote the series, based on Mary Lovell’s biography “The Mitford Girl.”

Firebird Pictures, a BBC Studios label, produces. The series was co-commissioned by BritBox International (for North America) and UKTV.

Robert Schildhouse, president of North America and managing director of BritBox International, said: “History has shown that the Mitford sisters are endlessly fascinating, and we expect the BritBox community will be just as fascinated by their glamor and scandals. Sarah Williams and Firebird have captured the unique and shocking story of the Mitfords in ‘Outrageous’ and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”
