Borussia Dortmund 1, PSG 0: Highlights as German giants advance to Champions League final

Borussia Dortmund are through to the Champions League final after beating PSG 1-0 in their semi-final on Tuesday. Mats Hummels’ header goal in the second half took the German team to an impressive early result, winning 2-0 on aggregate.

BVB will now face Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the final on June 1.

PSG hit the post four times in this second leg and registered almost five expected goals over the two legs, but could not find the back of the net as Kylian Mbappe’s time in Paris comes to an end with an expected move to Real Madrid this summer.

First leg

Flying close to the sun has been a familiar scenario for PSG in Europe this season and it remains a recurring theme now with a 1-0 deficit having to be overturned for the second time in successive rounds after the first leg. Barcelona were bowled out after the Ligue 1 champions overcame a 3-2 home defeat and now the trick must be done in reverse, with a one-goal deficit to bring back home, which should theoretically be easier for Paris . Fullkrug’s try in the 36th minute in Dortmund made the difference in the opening match, and now it’s up to PSG to create the chance they created in Germany, but this time to take it. Terzic’s side also created more openings but were limited to just one shot on target here earlier this season and Luis Enrique has this Parisian side looking much better now than they did then. Since the opening day of this season in Ligue 1, PSG have failed to score at the Parc des Princes, while BVB’s five clean sheet is the best competition for Tuesday, so something has to be done.

The Dortmund route

Terzic’s side romped past Atletico Madrid in spectacular fashion with an aggregate score of 5-4 to reach the last four for the first time since 2012/2013 under Jurgen Klopp. Dortmund automatically qualified for the Champions League by winning the first leg and could still equal their 1996-97 performance if they go all the way. BVB moved ahead of PSG in Group F, with Milan into the UEFA Europa League and Newcastle United bowing out. The Germans have won just two of their last seven meetings with PSG, the other coming in the 2019/20 round of 16, but they extended their unbeaten home run to 11 UCL games with last week’s win.

PSG’s route

Luis Enrique’s men defeated Barcelona in spectacular fashion to reach these semi-finals with a 6-4 aggregate success in Catalonia. This is PSG’s third final four appearance in the last five seasons, which is a big improvement on some of their previous efforts. Real Sociedad fell in the round of 16 to quarter-final opponents Barça and it was Dortmund who finished above Les Parisiens in Group F, although PSG won 2-0 at home and drew 1-1 away. That 3-1 combination would be enough to send the French champions to the final for the first time since 2020, but the Ligue 1 giants would need a 3-0 home win to replicate that aggregate scoreline here. Last week’s defeat ended an unbeaten run of fifteen away games in all competitions for Paris.

PSG: Lucas Hernandez’s PSG season is over, as are his UEFA Euro 2024 hopes with France and possibly his 2024 post-surgery following last week’s nasty injury. Hernandez and Presnel Kimpembe – both French regulars when fit – have now fallen victim to long-term injuries that could have major consequences for their careers. Lucas Beraldo’s intervention is more likely than Milan Skriniar and Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola’s wasteful performance in Germany potentially opening the door for Marco Asensio, Lee Kang-in or Goncalo Ramos to help Kylian Mbappé in attack for what will almost certainly be his last UCL is playing at Parc des Princes with PSG.

Potential PSG XI: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Beraldo, Mendes; Ruiz, Vitinha, Zaire-Emery; Dembele, Ramos, Mbappe.

Dortmund: Julian Ryerson was taken off injured against Augsburg, while Ramy Bensebaini, Julien Duranville and Sebastien Haller also missed. Ryerson and Haller should be fit on Tuesday, but Karim Adeyemi is slightly concerned after taking a knock. Assuming he is fit, Adeyemi and Manchester United owner Jadon Sancho would have to start again.

Prediction

PSG’s home form and ability to bounce back should still make them favorites, but only in the nick of time and a Dortmund goal could be fatal. A one-goal home win, which would force extra time and possibly penalties, wouldn’t be a huge surprise, but Luis Enrique’s Parisiens will often imagine breaking through the German backline. If it lasts more than 90 minutes, it could end 3-1 for Paris after extra time. Choose: PSG 2, Dortmund 0.
