CNN Fact-Checker reveals two new 'seriously false' claims from Trump

According to CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale, Donald Trump “lied a lot” during a press conference at his golf club in New Jersey on Thursday.

Many of the untruths had been debunked before, but Dale told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer there were two claims he had not heard before, “both of which are blatantly wrong.”

Trump claimed during remarks to reporters that the state of California allows people to rob stores as long as the thieves take less than $950. “It’s thieves going into stores with calculators that work out how much it is,” he said.

The Republican candidate then claimed that it was Vice President Kamala Harris who implemented this rule.

“First and foremost, shoplifting remains illegal in California, regardless of the amount,” Dale said. “What actually happened was that in 2014 there was a referendum, a ballot proposal, passed by California voters that made it a misdemeanor instead of a misdemeanor to steal property valued at less than $950. But it’s still illegal. It still carries a prison sentence of up to six months.”

“As for the claim that Vice President Harris was the one who did that, in fact she did not do it,” Dale continued. “She was attorney general and as attorney general she said it would be inappropriate for her to even take a public position on this initiative, so she remained neutral on this matter.”

Dale didn’t delve too deeply into the former president’s numerous other false claims, which he summarized as “a whole bunch of nonsense.”
