Company recalls microdosing sweets after FDA records nearly 20 hospitalizations

Prophet Premium Blends of Santa Ana, CA, is recalling Diamond Shruumz Infused Cones, Chocolate Bars and Gummies (Micro- and Mega/Extreme-Dose) because the products contain Muscimol, a chemical found in mushrooms.

The company declined to take action, but after negotiations with the Food and Drug Administration, it eventually recalled the products. Twenty-three people have been hospitalized due to side effects from the products.

Muscimol may be a possible cause of symptoms consistent with those observed in people who became ill after eating Diamond Shruumz products. Reported symptoms include those related to seizures, agitation, involuntary muscle contractions, loss of consciousness, confusion, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting, abnormal heart rate and hyper/hypotension, according to the Food and Drug Administration recall.

Diamond Shruumz Infused Cones, Chocolate Bars and Gummies (Micro- and Mega/Extreme-Dose) were distributed nationally through retail stores and mail order. All lots and expiration dates and all flavors of Diamond Shruumz Infused Cones, Chocolate Bars and Gummies (Micro- and Mega/Extreme-Dose) are included in this recall. In the event that the product is missing batch information or expiration dates, all flavors of Diamond Shruumz Infused Cones, Chocolate Bars and Gummies (Micro- and Mega/Extreme-Dose) products are still included in this recall.

According to the FDA, at least 39 people have reported serious reactions to the chocolate bars, as well as gummies and cones. Twenty-three of them required hospitalization. Several serious reactions have been reported, including respiratory failure.

After receiving complaints, the company reviewed the products’ certificates of analysis (COAs), which showed that they contained higher than normal amounts of muscimol. Prophet Premium Blends initiated this recall and has halted production and distribution of the Diamond Shruumz product line while the FDA and Prophet Premium Blends continue their investigation into the cause of the serious side effects.

Retailers and wholesalers should discontinue use, stop distribution, immediately quarantine the product, and contact their sales representative to initiate a return and refund. After contacting their sales representatives, Prophet Premium Blends will issue return shipping labels, verify inventory, and then issue the refund.

Consumers who have purchased Diamond Shruumz products are urged to discontinue use of the product, destroy the product and contact Prophet Premium Blends via phone at 209-314-0881 or email at info@diamondshruumz.com with their order number to initiate the refund. Consumers are strongly encouraged to inform Prophet Premium Blends that the consumer has destroyed the product to ensure it is no longer accessible.
