Confirmed: Google Fit is shutting down
Ten years ago, Google launched Google Fit, a platform that provided various APIs for a wide range of apps focused on health.
It is now clear that Google Fit will be discontinued, as Google wants to focus on the similar Android Health platform instead.
According to a post on the Android Developers Blog, developers have until June 30, 2025 to replace the affected APIs.
“Android Health’s mission is to help billions of Android users live healthier lives by accessing, storing and controlling their health, fitness and safety data.” Google said at its I/O 2024 developer conference.
One of the most important updates going forward concerns Wear OS 5. The Health Services set of APIs will include two new features:
- New data types for running
- Support for rejected causes
Primarily, this means that smartwatches running the Wear OS 5 operating system will provide more insightful data for runners, such as ground contact time, stride length, vertical oscillation and vertical ratio.
