Disgraced officer Derek Chauvin is facing a $9 million excessive force lawsuit

As we previously reported, a medical examiner ruled Floyd’s death a homicide, noting that heart disease and drug use contributed to his death, but that restraining his body and compressing his neck were the primary causes.

Chauvin is currently serving more than 22 years in prison following his 2021 conviction for manslaughter, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He was also sentenced to 21 years in prison on federal civil rights charges as part of a plea agreement, for which he will serve concurrent time.

Chauvin and Jensen received a call to go to 41st Avenue South after a report of a possible drunk driver with his vehicle stuck in a snowbank, according to the new lawsuit.

Day’s van became stuck after she stopped because she realized she was too drunk to drive, according to the complaint. She had drunk earlier that day, taken a nap and then woke up to pick up her child from daycare.
