The UEFA Euro 2024 group stage is over and there are a few surprise names in the round of 16 draw, with Austria and Slovenia mixing in with some of the bigger boys. Most, if not all, of the usual suspects are present and favorites before the tournament France And Englandas well as hosts Germany and defending champions Italy are all discussed. However, their chances of going all the way now are not as good as they were before things got going almost two weeks ago.

We take a look at where everyone stands ahead of the knockout stages.

1

+2

Spain

The form team that emerges from Group B this summer with a 100% record with nine points, La Roja are looking unexpectedly good. A potential quarter-final with Germany or Denmark could be followed by a semi-final with France or Portugal. Few teams currently want to face the Spaniards with an average of almost two goals per game so far.

2

Germany

The home team arrived too late to save a draw Switzerland as Group A came to an end. However, that should not undo the country’s encouraging start Julian Nagelsmann team with a tournament-leading eight goals ahead of the round of 16 against a Danish side struggling to score and with a potential quarter-final against Spain awaiting the winner. With opportunities for the semi-finals of Portugal and France, the Germans face a difficult route.

3

+9

Austria

The Austrians have really impressed with six goals in their last two matches, making them one of the highest scoring teams at this summer’s European Championship so far. The four goals conceded give an indication of the challenges they face in the round of 16, but getting them to this point with the style they have shown is already an impressive achievement from Ralf Rangnick.

4

Portugal

The Portuguese qualified before a ball was even kicked in their third and final match in Group F and could have had a 100% record as Spain entered the knockout stages, but blew it. Roberto Martinez’s side will be set for the quarter-finals, where they can meet France, but first they must get through the round of 16 and a tricky Slovenian side with as much ease as they did in their first two group games.

5

+7

Turkey

Four years after being tipped by many as the dark horses for Euro 2020, this Turkish team won two of their three matches in Group F and will face surprise package Austria this year. This is a huge opportunity for both countries to reach the quarter-finals but score as many goals as they allow points against a leaky defense that could be their downfall against the prolific Austrians.

6

-5

France

Les Bleus are no longer undefeated and also finished with just one win and two draws from three games and just two goals. Didier Deschamps’ men have also kept two clean sheets so far, but a lack of lead at the top is a concern and a quarter-final against Portugal looks likely. The only major difference with the French is that their identical record to the English was not enough to secure first place in Group D.

7

-2

England

The Three Lions reached the round of 16, but in a very disappointing way. Gareth Southgate’s England team may be undefeated but they have been equally unconvincing with just two goals in three games so far, including the snoozefest, their goalless draw against plucky Slovenia. It’s almost like looking at France.

8

-1

Switzerland

The Swiss are consistently hard to beat at international tournaments, so it’s no surprise they’ve held their own after finishing unbeaten in Group A. The Nati were only denied top spot by a late equalizer in Germany, but will look to imagine against Italy, which could set up a match. intriguing quarter-final with England.

9

-1

Belgium

Domenico Tedesco’s side had to settle for second place in Group E, behind Romania, and now the Red Devils will face old enemies France in the round of 16. Two goalless games out of three in the group stage isn’t exactly what was expected from such a talented side. So improvement will be expected.

10

-4

The Netherlands

The Dutch are now one of the main wildcards at this European Championship, after their loss to Austria left them behind Rangnick’s men and France, despite a draw against Les Blues. Ronald Koeman will rue his team’s disallowed goal against the French, but the bottom line is that they allowed the Austrians to take the lead three times as part of a worrying trend that has seen them fall four behind in Germany. However, Romania will feel like a blessing in the round of 16.

11

-2

Italy

As dramatic as their last gasp qualification was Croatia, it was a disappointing Euro for the Azzurri. It started with Luciano Spalletti’s men falling behind early against Albania and managing just one win, followed by a narrow defeat to Spain before the dramatic draw against Croatia. The Italians will consider themselves fortunate to have been in a position to move up to second place and now face a tough draw against Switzerland in the round of 16.

12 +3 Romania Although they have struggled to reach the highs of their opening win over Ukraine, the Romanians took top spot in Group E, ahead of Belgium. Now that they unexpectedly face the Netherlands, can the Tricolorii regain that productive form and progress towards the quarter-finals?

13

+10

Georgia

One of the real feel-good stories of this summer is that the Georgians reach the round of 16 at a major international tournament for the first time ever. By Willy Sagnol men have already made history and everything from this point on will be a very welcome bonus.

14

+2

Slovakia

In third place in Group E, Francesco Calzona’s side showed against Belgium that they could make things difficult for England, although they are still likely to be regarded as a favorable draw. It is probably considered satisfactory to get this far and reach the knockouts before the result of the round of 16 is known.

15

+4

Slovenia

Despite three draws and one clean sheet being no different from Denmark, the big difference is that no one expected Matjaz Kek’s side to come out of Group C ahead. Serbia. Not only did they do that, they also avoided defeat, keeping their impressive unbeaten run intact while making history by reaching the knockout stages for the first time.

16

-5

Denmark

Although for many people the dark horses for Euro 2020, the Danes have disappointingly advanced to the round of 16 with three draws and not even one goal per match. As expected, they did take the lead over Slovenia, but it came down to the smallest margin: one yellow card. The Scandinavians are not expected to reach the quarter-finals against host country Germany.
