If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Generation Z, it’s that words can mean more than we ever thought. Take ‘cooking’ for example. Cooking has moved beyond its original culinary roots to become a sartorial expression used when an ensemble doubles down in battle. Last week, stars “cooked” everywhere from movie premieres to the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. She tapped into their inner goddess and the results were distinct ensembles that reflected individual values and higher personalities.

On the final night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, former First Lady Michelle Obama and actress Kerry Washington took their stand and did it in true style. Elsewhere, film premieres like “The Supremes At Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat” premiere in Los Angeles and “Blink Twice” presented in London Sana Lathan And Zoe Kravitz in beautiful red numbers. Lathan impressed in a conservative offering with some skin in view, while Kravitz showed more skin in a slip dress and a matching belt that added dimension. In other words, movie premieres this past week served as mini booths for showcasing stylish stars.

The looks

Apparently cutouts were a choice last week. Naomi Ackie and Mary J. Blige confirmed this claim in neutral tones with interesting cutouts in the midriff. Ackie attended the film premiere of “Blink Twice” in London and looked stunning in a draped Loewe dress and her alluring smile. Meanwhile, Ms. Blige brought the sass to her “Breathing” music video in a white Abdul Sall Couture number, accessorized with Alexis Bittar jewelry.

The trend of showing the belly continued, but differently, as the other team opted for pure options. By Solange Knowles in a monochrome outfit Monica Denise in a daring sheer top with feather-adorned bottoms, it was a parade of skin. The point seemed to be, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it.” Summer may be over quickly, but summer bawdy continues to apply pressure.

We need to highlight the safe haven where Black women came together to both make style statements and engage in purpose-driven initiatives: New York’s ‘Sip and Slay’ event by Sabrina Elba. The beautypreneur arrived at the event in a backless denim set with a tortoise neckline and a voluminous silhouette, which she styled with white pumps and a pixie cut. The look was chic and comfortable. In addition to walking in her purpose and showing the way for other Black women, Elba’s choice of minimal tones and simplistic style sets her apart in a sophisticated way.

Designer Monse also had a busy week, dressing up dignitaries like Michelle Obama for her inspirational speech on the closing night of the Democratic National Convention. The former First Lady was dressed in a crossover jacket and cropped trousers from the brand. The look was neatly tailored and the waist belt served its purpose diligently.
