Gemini now supports YouTube Music playback controls

Gemini finally gets an extension to connect to YouTube Music. The AI-powered chatbot is therefore closer to the ideal replacement for the Google Assistant. Now you can control playback of your favorite music and podcasts with voice commands without having to open the YouTube Music app first.

Gemini’s YouTube Music extension is finally rolling out

Nowadays Gemini is capable of many things, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. There are some Google Assistant features that are not yet supported. So you still can’t ditch the Classic Assistant entirely if you’re a regular user of these features. For example, you couldn’t access the contents of your playlists on YouTube Music. That’s changing, however, as Google is widely rolling out the YouTube Music extension for Gemini.

Extensions in Gemini allow the chatbot to access data from multiple services. This way you can make requests that involve this data. You can view the available extensions at https://gemini.google.com/extensions. If you already received the YouTube Music extension, you can enable it using the switch. Then you will be able to do that control playback of music and podcasts from YouTube Music.

Supported prompt formats and examples

To make it as easy as possible for you, Google has created a list of them supported prompt formats, together with practical examples. The company divides the commands based on their functionality: to search for songs/playlists and to control playback. The list of prompt formats you can use to search for content includes the following:

Find [song name] Through [artist name]Find the album [album title] Through [artist name], Find [genre] music, Search for songs similar to [song name] Through [artist name]Find the song that goes with it [song lyrics]Find the [song name] music video, start a radio based on the song [song name]To search [artist name] songs.

There is also a list of prompt formats to control music playback: Play [song name] Through [artist name]Play the album [album title] Through [artist name], Play [genre] music, play the [song name] music video, start a radio based on the song [song name].

Google’s list of practical examples includes commands like “Show some rock music”, “Turn on White Noise @YouTubeMusic”, “Play music I like”, “Play rock music radio”, “Show me songs from modern artists that preserve the classic blues. alive.” You can use them as a guide when making your own requests.

Some things to keep in mind

There are some things you need to know. Currently, the YouTube Music extension for Gemini only works with English commands. Moreover, it will work a little differently on Android and iOS. On Android, commands such as ‘Play [song]” starts background playback immediately. On the other hand, on iOS, the command opens the YouTube Music app first.
