A 10-year-old girl riding a dirt bike died Thursday after being struck by a car near Pagosa Springs, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

On Thursday around 5:30 p.m., state troopers received a call about a fatal crash at the intersection of Forest Service Road 631 and Forest Service Road 640 in Archuleta County near Pagosa Springs, according to a Colorado State Patrol news release.

A girl riding a dirt bike south on Forest Service Road 640 ran a stop sign at the intersection of Forest Service Road 631. She was unable to make a sharp right turn onto Forest Service Road 631 and went into the eastbound lane, according to the state of Colorado. Patrol. An 18-year-old man driving a Toyota Tacoma eastbound on Forest Service Road 631 struck the dirt bike. The man was not injured and remained at the scene, the news release said.

The girl was wearing a helmet and protective clothing when the accident occurred. Bystanders and emergency medical services personnel performed life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. The girl has not been publicly identified.

The crash is under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol. More information is not yet available.
