Inmate dies in custody Thursday at Denver Detention Center

A man in custody at the downtown Denver detention center died Thursday morning after suffering a medical emergency, sheriff’s officials said.

An emergency medical team was called to the detention center around 6 a.m. Thursday after staff noticed the man unresponsive in a housing unit, according to a news release from the Denver Sheriff’s Department.

The team provided medical assistance, but the man died at the detention center, the release said.

Denver police have opened a death investigation into the incident and say no further information can be shared at this time.

The man’s identity and official cause of death will be released at a later date by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.
