Just a year after the Succession series finale, J. Smith-Cameron doesn’t think it’s too early for a spin-off.

Smith-Cameron, 66, portrayed Gerri Kellman on the Emmy-winning HBO show and spoke to We weekly as part of its collaboration with Jif, which unveils a new innovation: Jif Spread with peanut butter and chocolate flavour.

For those who need a refresher, Succession ended with Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) as the new CEO of WayStar Royco. He eventually hired Gerri as part of his team.

“I think she is doing well with her new collaboration with Tom and Lukas [Mattson]” said Smith-Cameron.

Although the Succession ended months ago, the Roy family is still at war as the cast prepares to compete against each other in multiple categories at the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday, January 15. Sarah Snook, Matthew Macfadyen and Kieran Culkin were just some of the stars from the hit HBO series to attend the event. While […]

She added that Gerri would not have to deal with the old Roy hierarchy, which would be ideal for her.

“I used to have this theory that as soon as Logan made someone a favorite, either [it] Kendall or Shiv or Roman or Jerry or Frank, they were somehow immediately put in the doghouse because he didn’t want anyone to take over,” she explained. “And so I feel like without having to deal with the Roy hierarchy, she’s probably doing a good job… I think she likes not having the target on her back… I think she likes to be the power behind the throne.”

It’s possible we’ll find out one day if Smith-Cameron is right. While the future of the franchise is up to the creator of the series Jesse ArmstrongSmith-Cameron believes the show’s premise will remain relevant.

“I think it’s very timely,” she said. “I don’t know if Jesse and his colleagues are ready for it yet, or if they ever will be. I think it’s a great idea, because if you just look [at] What’s going on right now in our country and really globally, there’s a lot of things that have happened over the last few seasons with politics and journalism and fake news and abuse of power and all that. It is extremely relevant.”

Life doesn’t always imitate art. While the Succession characters aren’t great at healthy relationships on-screen, many of the actors have happy, long-lasting romances off-screen. Sarah Snook, who plays Shiv Roy in the HBO series, secretly tied the knot in February 2021. Eight months later, she revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic helped her realize that her… […]

She added: “If he waits a year or two, it will still come at the right time. I think it would be great if he used all the exact characters or made up new ones. I think he’s paved the way for a very sharp and funny show, if that’s what he wants.”

And if he does, fans might be able to see Gerri and Roman (Kieran Culkin) rekindle their romance. However, Smith-Cameron is not convinced this is in the cards.

“He kind of shot himself in the foot, didn’t he?” she said, referencing when Roman fired her near the end of the series. “I think it was quite bitter in the end.”
