Comedian Jerrod Carmichael‘s joke about race-based role-playing with his white friend doesn’t so much get laughs as raise eyebrows and anger.
The controversial joke came on HBO’s “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show” … where JC says, “I sometimes joke to him that our relationship is like that of a slave and the son of a master … who teaches me to read by candlelight .”

That opening line alone caused some cheering, but Jerrod continued, “Yeah, he groans too because he’s a good person. He doesn’t like that damn joke. I like that joke. That’s my burden, I guess. that’s hilarious!!’
Naturally, the scene, which debuted Sunday night, was posted and reposted all over Instagram… and set off a firestorm of criticism as people labeled Jerrod’s joke an inappropriate take on racial inequality.
Many commenters accused JC of showing self-loathing, while others said the whole “joke” was downright cringe-inducing. The backlash likely got worse on X, where some users called him a danger to the black gay community.
It looks like Jerrod is feeling the heat as he has taken a step back by making his IG account private.
As for publicly addressing the controversy… he’s keeping tight-lipped for now.
