KC current boss Vlatko Andonovski complains about weather delay challenges: 'We have no flights for tomorrow'

Kansas City Current head coach Vlatko Andonovski didn’t hold back after the team’s 1-1 draw against the Houston Dash, which lasted six hours. After playing in Los Angeles to end the month of April, the team started a new month in Houston and the weather affected the duration of the game, to say the least. The Current had a one-goal lead at halftime, and with storms in the area a 15-minute halftime reset turned into a four-hour rain delay for both teams.

“The worst thing is that you can’t actually organize anything because the delay is not ‘four hours and we’re going to start’. It’s 20 minutes. It’s 30 minutes. It’s 10 minutes. You’re constantly moving,” Andonovski said after the match about navigating a long delay.

“But it is what it is. The league wanted us to finish this game [on Sunday], and here we are. We finished the game, hopefully everyone [is] healthy… the main goal for us is to come out of this match healthy, because yes, it was a bit difficult, not only for our players, but also for the opponent.

Houston rallied for a come-from-behind tie, but have a quick turnaround of their own ahead of a midweek match they will host against reigning NWSL champions NJ/NY Gotham FC. The league welcomed the return of midweek fixtures to the regular season this year, with clubs getting their first test in managing match load. No one can predict the weather, but the long weather break has already had an impact on Kansas City’s next game, according to Andonovski.

“We have to be on a flight to Seattle in forty minutes. Obviously we missed the flight. So we have to find out [that] out now. We don’t have a hotel. We have to pick our hotel. We don’t have any flights for tomorrow. We have to figure out flights. We had training for a number of players who we believe needed training time to perform on Wednesday.

“There are so many things planned in training in Seattle, so we’re not going to be able to do that. Obviously, we lost the chance to recover all day. So the schedule, as I said, is already a challenge For starters, we have by far the worst schedule in the league, and this just made it worse.”

Kansas City takes on Seattle Reign FC on Wednesday at Lumen Field and returns to CPKC Stadium to host the North Carolina Courage on Sunday.
