Arrowhead Stadium was filled Saturday night mainly to see Lionel Messi, and even with the presence of Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the World Cup winner did not disappoint. Inter Miami won 3-2 at Sporting Kansas City, with Messi notching a stunning goal and an equally phenomenal assist as the Herons bounced back from elimination from the Concacaf Champions Cup.

Tata Martino’s team, having just outperformed Monterrey in the CCC quarterfinals on Wednesday, went all-in for this match with more than 70,000 fans filling the home of the Super Bowl champion Chiefs. A 1-0 deficit just six minutes into the match did not matter as just over ten minutes later Messi put Diego Gomez ahead with a through ball to make it 1-1. Gomez scored the winning goal two minutes from time when he found Luis Suarez right in front of the goal, but the magic moment came in the 51st minute.

Sporting were able to fill their box with defenders and keep Messi in front of them, and as it became harder to get quality looks from close range, Messi decided to take matters into his own hands. In a similar part of the pitch to his goal against Mexico in the 2022 World Cup, Messi’s ball flew into the air this time, creating a rocket that dived before scorching the back of the net. Look:

The absolute definition of a golazo. That’s what the fans wanted to see. Mahomes, fresh off winning back-to-back Super Bowls with the Chiefs, took over the action with his wife, with Chiefs coach Andy Reid also in attendance.

Messi has scored plenty of goals in his short time at Inter Miami, but it’s fair to say one of them might be his best yet as the Herons finished the night in first place in the Eastern Conference.
