Just when you thought Lionel Messi couldn’t do anything else to make your jaw drop, he goes off and does this. On Saturday night, Messi recorded five assists and one second-half goal as Inter Miami defeated the New York Red Bulls 6-2. He became the first player in MLS history to score six goals in a single match, while also becoming the only player to record five assists in a single MLS match.

NYRB went into the match at Inter with a pretty solid defensive record, allowing just one goal per match over 10 games. That number of goals allowed took a huge hit in a wild attacking display as Inter Miami has now scored at least three goals in four consecutive games.

Messi found the net once and then provided a hat-trick of assists for Luis Suarez, while providing two more assists for new signing Matias Rojas.

On the fifth goal of the match, Messi and Suarez simply played with the NYRB defense as if they were playing against an amateur team. Look:

In the process, Messi became the first player in Inter Miami history to score ten goals and ten assists in a single season, having only done so at 35% during the 2024 season.

That win kept Inter three points ahead of the Eastern Conference and well on their way to a place in the play-offs.
