Manchester United are about to extend the star playmaker’s contract Bruno FernandesCBS Sports sources said. The Portugal international is expected to put pen to paper on a deal that will see him stay at Old Trafford until the end of the 2026/27 season, with the option to extend for a further 12 months.

Fernandes’ current term expires in the summer of 2026 and while United could extend that deal for another season, tying the 29-year-old to new terms would be a welcome sign of commitment from all parties. Fernandes was the Premier League’s leading chance creator last season, scoring 79 goals in 234 appearances for the Red Devils.

Fernandes has been the subject of much speculation in recent seasons amid United’s troubles and was on the wishlist for the Saudi Arabian Pro League last season. In May, the club captain confirmed his intention to stay at Old Trafford, saying: “After this difficult season, it is my responsibility to more”.

In the Community Shield, Fernandes made an impressive start to the new season as United pushed crosstown rivals Manchester City to a penalty shootout, albeit from which Pep Guardiola’s side emerged victorious. At Wembley and in the final weeks of last season, Fernandes was often deployed as the most forward-thinking forward in the United line-up, operating as a false nine.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are close to completing the double signing of Mathijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, who are expected to leave Bayern Munich for a combined fee of more than $75 million. The arrival of the latter was facilitated by Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s an impending move to West Ham United, where he had to undergo a medical on Sunday afternoon.
