More protesters were cited after they refused to leave the Auraria Campus building
Police cited 10 more pro-Palestinian protesters on Monday on charges of trespassing, interference and disturbing the peace after the group refused to leave a building on the Auraria Campus, according to school officials.
On Monday around 4 p.m., more than a dozen protesters from the 19-day-old Gaza Solidarity Camp on the Tivoli Quad marched to the University of Colorado Denver Student Commons and entered the Bursar’s Office on the fifth floor, according to a news release from Auraria Campus. .
Officials told the protesters to leave and the campus was placed on lockdown around 4:45 p.m. due to police activity in the community. said a post on social mediaand personnel in the area were evacuated.
Some demonstrators left peacefully and continued their protest outside, but 10 remained in the building and were issued summonses by Auraria Campus police, officials said.
According to the press release, the protesters were immediately released and the lockdown was lifted at 5:48 p.m.
This is the second time protesters have been cited by police in an Auraria Campus building. On May 7, approximately 14 protesters, including two wheelchair users, were issued summonses for trespassing and disobeying lawful orders after sitting in a circle and singing pro-Palestinian chants inside the Advanced Manufacturing Sciences Institute.
Earlier that day, protesters entered the Tivoli Student Union as Angie Paccione, the executive director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education, met with a group of protesters. Another group entered the fraternity’s executive offices and left after agreeing to meet with campus leaders at a different time.
More than 40 protesters were arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest. Camp tents were removed on April 26. Protesters, who had been camping near the Tivoli Quad since April 25, rebuilt the camp later that day.
The Auraria Campus is home to CU Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver and the Community College of Denver.
The anti-war protesters are demanding that the CU System and MSU Denver divest themselves of any funds or companies associated with or doing business with Israel.
