Netflix co-founder says Joe Biden should resign

Netflix co-founder and executive chairman Reed Hastings has joined the growing number of Democrats publicly urging Joe Biden to step down as the party’s candidate for president in 2024. Biden seeks re-election, but his disastrous performance during the first presidential debate against Donald Trump has led some Democrats to call for him to resign as they believe it is the only way the party can defeat Trump.

“Biden must step aside to give a strong Democratic leader a chance to defeat Trump and keep us safe and prosperous,” Hastings said. an email to The New York Times.

Variety has contacted Netflix for additional comment.

As The Times reported, Hastings and his wife, Patty Quillin, have long been among the Democratic party’s biggest donors. The couple has donated more than $20 million to the party in recent years, including as much as $1.5 million to Biden’s 2020 campaign against Trump. The two provided $100,000 last summer to support Biden’s 2024 campaign.

Biden’s lackluster performance in the first presidential rift in 2024 has seemingly divided Democrats. Sara Haines, co-host of “The View,” proclaimed the morning after the debate that Biden should get out of the way if Democrats wanted to prevent Trump from becoming president again.

“I think President Biden should resign and be replaced,” Haines told her co-hosts. “If we want to defeat Donald Trump in November, I absolutely think that… they have to act quickly, and I would implore those closest to the president to have the very difficult conversations that they are going to have to have and not just because of the political consequences, but also because of humanity, its integrity and its legacy. That’s all at stake now.”

Alyssa Farah Griffin, co-host of Haines’ The View, agreed, saying, “Donald Trump is a threat to our democracy. We need someone who can beat him…[Joe] He must put his country before his own ambition and he must step aside and pass the baton. Mark my words: if it’s Trump versus Biden, it’s going to be Trump.”

While reports have emerged that Biden is now considering stepping down as Democratic nominee amid a backlash over his debate performance, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the press has assured That is not the case.

“Absolutely not,” says Jean-Pierre. “And I think you heard that directly from the campaign.”
