New E. coli O157:H7 outbreak detected

The Food and Drug Administration has identified a new outbreak of infections with E. coli O157:H7.

The agency announced the outbreak on April 17 and indicated that traceback efforts have begun. However, the FDA did not report which food or foods were traced.

The FDA had identified nine patients in the outbreak as of the announcement. The agency did not report how old the patients are or where they live.

The investigation into an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium continues and the number of patients is increasing. Since announcing the outbreak on April 10, the FDA has identified one more sick person, bringing the total to 12.

As with the new E. Coli outbreak, the FDA has not yet determined which foods are the source of Salmonella. The agency has begun traceback efforts, but has not reported which food or foods are being traced.

None of the outbreak investigations involve sampling or on-site inspections.
