According to a press release from the Colorado Department of Transportation, nightly variable traffic in the Interstate 70 Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel will begin in late April.
Ongoing tunnel projects and maintenance work, including drainage, signage and security improvements, will require lane closures in the tunnel throughout the spring and summer. These closures have been suspended over the winter and will resume with continued warmer weather.
The lane closures will begin overnight on April 28. A single lane will be closed in the western bore of the tunnel from 10pm to 6am. Periods of complete overnight closures of the western bore will begin on April 29. Changing traffic will use the eastern bore. May 29 to 2, May 5 to 9 and May 12 to 16 from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., the release said.
Both directions of I-70 traffic stop at the tunnel entrance, while one direction is guided through the open bore. According to CDOT, the traffic stops will last 20 minutes and delays will be minimal.
During the May closures, maintenance crews will wash the tunnel walls, clean the drains and sweep the sidewalk. More work will require single lane closures and full closures at night with alternating traffic throughout the summer. According to CDOT, the work will take place Sunday through Thursday evening, with no scheduled closures on weekends or holidays.
