Olympic women's soccer schedule, standings, score, live stream: how to watch USWNT, more in Paris

Some of the world’s best women’s national teams have the chance to bring home some big hardware this summer at the Olympic Games, which will take place across France, including the official tournament city of Paris.

Canada enters as the reigning gold medalists after winning the competition’s top prize for the first time at the pandemic-postponed Tokyo Games, while the U.S. women’s national team will look to improve on their bronze medal tally from three years ago. The four-time gold medalists are one of the most compelling storylines at this year’s Olympics, aiming to bounce back from their earliest ever exit at the Women’s World Cup a year ago with a revamped squad and a new head coach in Emma Hayes.

However, the favorites for the gold medal are Spain. A year after winning their first ever Women’s World Cup title, La Roja have not stayed on the pitch since. This is the first time Spain has participated in the women’s football competition at the Olympic Games and they are in pole position to come out with a medal.

The Olympics are essentially a more crazy version of the World Cup, with only 12 teams qualifying for the Olympics, while 32 teams can participate in the World Cup. The teams that will compete in the medal matches have just 17 days to play six matches, far less than the month allocated by FIFA for a seven-match trip to the World Cup finals and the third-place match.

Squad sizes will also go from 23 at the World Cup to 18 at the Olympics, plus four alternates. Tournament organizers have updated the rules around alternates for the 2024 Olympics, allowing teams to add an alternate to a matchday squad in place of a player on the temporary injury list, as long as teams give six hours or more notice.

Here’s a look at the women’s soccer rankings and schedule for the Olympic Games.
