After a long silence, news about the second season of One Piece is finally coming. Several actors have just joined the cast of the pirate saga and they will play vicious criminals and pirates.
In the past, Netflix hasn’t had much luck with live-action anime adaptations. The infamous 2017 Death Note movie was criticized and the Cowboy Bebop series was canceled after just one season. However, one production has bucked the trend.
One Piece, a live-action series based on a manga by Eiichirō Oda, was a surprising success. According to Netflix’s website, the show was viewed 18.5 million times in the first weekend after its premiere.
The secret behind its success is retaining the spirit of the original, as well as great casting, inventive set design and excellent CGI. It’s no wonder fans are eagerly awaiting the next part of the show. Here’s everything you need to know about One Piece’s second season.
Possible release date of One Piece season 2
Netflix has officially renewed One Piece for a second season. Check out the official announcement below, which also confirms that Tony Tony Chopper will be joining the crew next season:
The show’s producers Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements told Variety that the scripts are ready to go, although they cannot move forward until the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved. If the studios reach a deal, the two estimate it will take 12 to 18 months before the series airs.
That’s a similar timeline to Season 1. Production on this began in January 2022 and ended in August of the same year, but the show debuted on Netflix a year later. Based on all that information, we won’t see One Piece season 2 until 2025 or later.
One Piece Season 2 Plot
Eiichirō Oda’s manga is one of the most extensive Japanese series: it consists of more than 1,000 chapters, collected in 106 volumes. In the show’s first season, Netflix only adapted 95 chapters, meaning there’s still plenty of comedic material for the showrunners to cover.
Season 1 is about the formation of the crew, setting common goals and the battles with the Marines. In Season 2, the serious treasure hunting will likely begin, as the Straw Hat Pirates decided to travel to the Grand Line. The journey is unlikely to be peaceful: the crew must fight their way through a stretch of sea called the Calm Belt, populated by gigantic beasts.
Furthermore, the young pirates will likely still be followed by Vice Admiral Garp and the Marines. The Straw Hat Pirates may have to battle with the sinister organization, the Baroque Works. As you may recall, Roronoa Zoro killed one of its members in the first episode of the series.
It is also possible that we will encounter more old enemies in season 2, such as Captain Alvida and Buggy the Clown.
