Nigel Farage has said Parliament should oppose an amendment that some say could give the DWP the right to access the bank accounts of anyone receiving DWP money.

Speaking GB NewsNigel Farage said: “We have heard a lot of stories about fraud recently, especially in the area of Universal Credit. And I have to say that the Department for Work and Pensions having the power to check people’s bank accounts and assets to make sure they aren’t being ripped off at first glance is a good thing.

“However, and this is worrying, there is going to be a change in government legislation that will give the DWP access to bank accounts which are, after all, not just financial transactions; they also say where you’ve traveled to and lots of other things you’ve done – making it accessible to anyone receiving DWP money.

“And that of course applies to every pensioner in the country.

“I have to say that I am not surprised that Big Brother Watch is saying that it is breathtaking that the Conservative government is so recklessly creating Big Brother spy powers to breach the people’s bank accounts, and that concerns me. In a sense, this is again about financial institutions, about their relationship with the government.

“I really think someone in Parliament needs to stand up and shout because the government is just getting bigger and bigger. Its ability to invade and even interfere with our lives is increasing because, quite frankly, it doesn’t do much good at all.”
