Ranking of potential Champions League finals if Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund advance

With the semi-finalists for this season’s UEFA Champions League officially announced, the countdown to the June 1 final at London’s Wembley Stadium has officially begun – and it could feature some of the sport’s biggest stars .

Paris Saint Germain and Borussia Dortmund were the first teams to book their places in the last four when they ousted Barcelona and Atletico Madrid respectively on Tuesday. Real Madrid and Bayern Munichmeanwhile, they punched their tickets on Wednesday, with Manchester City and Arsenal heading home.

The semi-finalists prepared themselves for some fascinating duels in the final, although some are of course more exciting than others. Here’s a ranking of this season’s possible Champions League finals, all set to entertain.

4. Borussia Dortmund vs Real Madrid

One of these matchups needs to end in bottom place, but this potential final reaches last place quite easily. Real Madrid may be the favorites to win this competition regardless of the opponent, but Dortmund are without a doubt the underdogs of the last four. A win for the La Liga leaders would feel like a foregone conclusion long before kick-off, even if many would be keen to see Dortmund ease the upset.

3. Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich

Bayern would also go into this match as favorites, but the interesting thing about this potential final is that Thomas Tuchel’s side have been remarkably inconsistent this season. The Champions League was the saving grace in a season that would otherwise not be worth remembering, including a 2-0 defeat to Dortmund last month. There is also the sentimental value of the domestic match at Wembley, as the last time the venue hosted the Champions League final both teams were in attendance. Bayern took home the trophy that day, and if they make it to the final this time, they could do so again to avoid the prospect of their first trophyless season in more than a decade. Oh, and there’s that little aspect where Tuchel has made a name for himself as Dortmund manager.

2. Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich

It feels like the most appropriate thing for a Champions League final to have two of Europe’s super clubs in the final, especially when you consider the stars on each side. Two of the match’s top scorers, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane, would compete for their first Champions League title. The added levels of intrigue to this final include Kane potentially hoisting his first major trophy in his home city and the prospect of Mbappe ending his farewell tour on the ultimate high.

Another thing worth considering that could knock this match off the list: This is the trophy PSG has been fervently chasing since Qatar Sports Investments took over the club over a decade ago. If they were to win the title a year later than City, it would only increase concerns around investment in the sport by sovereign wealth funds, which appear to be the biggest power players in the sport at the moment.

1. Paris Saint Germain vs Real Madrid

This final would also herald PSG’s potential showdown with Bayern, with two of Europe’s top clubs battling it out for the continent’s biggest title. The biggest story hanging over this Champions League season, however, is Mbappe’s future, so perhaps the most fitting ending would be his current team choosing the side he is expected to be gone by before the summer. It would be difficult to predict how it will play out, but the final result would stick as a story for Mbappe’s next season, regardless of where he ends up.

However, the PSG winning point remains, which could ultimately add a less glamorous layer to this Champions League season.
