Recap of 'The Masked Singer' Season 11, Episode 8: Miss Cleocatra Reveal

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 11, Episode 8 of “The Masked Singer,” “Girl Group Night,” which aired April 24 on Fox.

Jenifer Lewis spent a year recovering from a devastating 10-foot fall while on safari in Tanzania. While she was still in bed, recovering, she received a call from ‘The Masked Singer’. “I still couldn’t walk,” she said Variety. “And my friends encouraged me to get out of bed and do what I love. ‘You’re in front of a live audience, you’re singing, you’re wearing a mask, but you’re still doing what you really love to do, which is entertain.’”

“The Masked Singer” revealed on Wednesday night’s edition that “Black-ish” star Lewis was “Miss Cleocatra” of Group B. Lewis was unmasked after performing En Vogue’s ‘Free Your Mind’, and before that, Etta James’ ‘Stormy Weather’.

Lewis said the show accommodated her limitations on stage. “They strapped me to the ground with a harness when I sang ‘Stormy Weather,’ and when I sang the En Vogue song, the microphone screwed down. You’ll see, I never let it go because I couldn’t walk. But it did make me feel good to get up and do ‘The Masked Singer.’ It was the best decision I made.”

Lewis came up with the idea of being a Cleopatra-like character, “because I knew they could carry me on stage. They could put me on the throne, and the brawny men could escort me around.”

But because she was still in a little pain, ‘I still took a little morphine. So if you look closely, when I sit on that throne, you’ll see a little nod up there,” Lewis said. “I was so stoned walking around!”

Lewis said she has improved tremendously in recent months. “I’m doing great,” she said. “People ask me, ‘How are you doing, on a scale of one to ten?’ I’m nine and a half. I want to tell the kids when you fall, however you fall, get up. Stand up. That’s all we have.”

Here were Group B’s performances on Wednesday’s Episode 8, “Girl Group Night”:

Gumball, “The Masked Singer” (Michael Becker / Fox)

Gumball

Song: ‘Wide Open Spaces’, by the Chicks

Panel guesses: Aaron Taylor Johnson, Derek Hough, Taran Killam

Note: Hosted by Carnie Wilson, who sings “Don’t Cha.” “Don’t you wish you could have played with Channing Tatum like me?”

Voice-over package: “You all made my heart beat with all your love last time. And the final blow, that was a lot of fun. It’s exciting to perform at a girl group night because there’s actually one girl who has been singing lead in my life for years. My wife. I still remember the night I met her. An angel from across the room. I knew at that moment that I would spend the rest of my life with her. And everything was perfect. Until she was diagnosed with a disease that would affect her later in life. Suddenly the forever we were planning looked very different and we had to make a decision. We can let what is on the horizon define us, or we can choose to be present in each moment. To say yes even more and explore all the wide open spaces there are. Tonight I will sing one of her favorite songs, especially for her.”

Previous issue: “If I Only Had a Heart,” by Jack Haley

Previous panel estimates: Chace Crawford, Kevin Jonas, Jamie Dornan

The Beets, “The Masked Singer” (Michael Becker / Fox)

Beets

Song: “I’m So Excited,” by the Pointer Sisters

Panel guesses: Brooks and Dunn; Titus Burgess and Alan Cumming; Zach Braff and Donald Faison

Note: Delivered by Raven-Symoné, who sings ‘Weak’. “We have made our Broadway audiences weak in the knees.”

Voice-over package: “Last time we really took it home. So the pressure is on to pay tribute to the ladies tonight. Like the best girl groups out there, we both bring our own spices. I was the total ladies’ man. [And I was the tough guy.] Two boys who couldn’t be more different from each other. But we didn’t try to outdo each other. Instead, like a good girl group, we worked together. [It was our organic friendship that made us a delicious duo and kept us on the menus nationwide.] Yeah, we’re still touring and hitting the town. [We’d be so excited to make it to the Group B finale. And tonight is the night that we’re going to make it happen.]”

Previous issue: ‘Home’ by Michael Bublé

Previous panel estimates: Will Arnett and Jason Bateman; K-Ci and Jojo; Steve Martin and Martin Short

Miss Cleocatra, “The Masked Singer” (Michael Becker / Fox)

Voice-over package: “I really caused a storm last time. I was the cat’s meow! I’m thrilled to be here tonight to champion fierce girl groups. You know, I had my own gang of amazing women who shaped me. Starting with my own mother. She was a maid, so I didn’t have to be. But the best gift I ever received from her was her work ethic. It made me the hardest hustler in Tinseltown. Now all the brightest stars are looking at me, including Michelle Obama and her mother. I am most proud of the little princesses who see me as their queen. I want them to know if they want to be supreme, free your mind and work harder than anyone else. And thank you, Mom, for showing me that!”

Voice-over package: “For thousands of years it was buried under the ice. Waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Beware, the seal. Hey guys, what’s it all about? Like the seal, I am cute, cuddly and friendly. It would make sense that I am the wildcard because I was wrongly perceived as a wild child. You only know me from your screens, radios or posters stuck to your walls. And I’m so excited to be here for girl group night because I was in one of the most famous groups in the world. And now I get your seal of approval, with a girl group song from some Masked Singer alumni.”
