It is believed that Mizuhara started placing bets with an illegal bookmaker in September 2021 and when losses started mounting, he misused his access to Ohtani’s financial accounts.

A review of Mizuhara’s transfers of Ohtani’s money to the bookmaker’s employees showed one transfer of $40,000 in November 2021 and another $300,000 transfer in February 2022.

Nearly 40 transfers totaling $15 million were made between February 2022 and October 2023, and three transfers totaling $1.25 million between December 2023 and January 2024.
