Scottie Scheffler live updates: World No. 1 makes progress despite arrest for assaulting police officer at PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 golfer, was arrested by police Friday ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship as he tried to avoid a traffic jam outside Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.

Traffic outside the golf course was stopped due to a crash that killed a pedestrian around 5 a.m. ET.

ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported that Scheffler tried to drive another 10 to 20 yards. When he stopped, a police officer asked Scheffler to exit his vehicle. Darlington reported the officer opened the car door and placed the 27-year-old in handcuffs and in the back of a police car. Video shows Scheffler in handcuffs, accompanied by two officers.

Scheffler was booked into the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections at 7:28 a.m. ET, according to online records. He is charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disobeying traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Scheffler was then released and arrived on the course shortly after 9 a.m. to play the second round of the PGA Championship at his 10:08 a.m. tee time.
