Smart drives boost 5G data traffic, powered by the Philippines' best 5G coverage experience

With 5G fast becoming the connectivity of choice among mobile subscribers in the country, wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc (Smart) of leading integrated telecom network PLDT Inc (PLDT) saw a sustained increase in average monthly 5G data traffic in 2023 , enhanced by its award-winning 5G mobile network.

By 2023, average quarterly 5G data traffic will almost double, an increase of 95% compared to the previous year. In the fourth quarter of 2023 alone, Smart recorded a 16 percent increase in average monthly data traffic on its 5G network, compared to the previous period. The driving force behind this growth has been the availability of new, cheaper 5G devices and the continued growth of Postpaid Unli5G Signature plans.

“As we strive to continue to provide our customers with the best mobile experience, we also ensure that our offers are valuable and relevant, and that we are also able to make the latest handsets more accessible to our subscribers to make it easier for them to upgrade,” said Alex O. Caeg, head of Smart Consumer Wireless Business.

This continued increase in data usage is supported by Smart’s mobile network, which was recently recognized for delivering the best 5G coverage experience in the Philippines, according to the latest report from independent analytics firm Opensignal. Smart’s mobile network covers 97% of the population and is part of the Philippines’ largest integrated network, which includes PLDT’s 1.1 million kilometer fiber optic infrastructure.

“Coverage is key to 5G adoption. Our latest quote from Opensignal is a testament to Smart’s commitment to expanding the reach of our network in the Philippines. These efforts are also paying off, as evidenced by the increase in our 5G data traffic, which has almost doubled,” said Caeg.

Smart’s initiatives to deliver enhanced mobile products and services are aligned with PLDT Group’s efforts to reduce the digital divide and deliver connectivity for all, in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), especially on SDG No. 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure . These also reinforce the Group’s support for the government’s overall digitalisation drive.
