The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup champions will chase history at the Olympic Games. Spain will meet Brazil in the Olympic semi-finals on Tuesday and if they advance they will have the chance to compete for the gold medal. No national team has ever won a World Cup and then won the Olympic Games in the subsequent tournament. Spain come from a wild penalty in the quarter-final against Colombia after being down 0-2 to advance. Brazil eliminated tournament hosts France in a gutsy 1-0 match, with Brazilian superstar Marta watching from the stands after a red card suspension.

It will be a rematch in the group stage before the semi-finals. The two teams faced off on the final matchday of group play and Spain defeated Brazil 2–0 to take top spot in the group.

Storylines

Spain: The world champions have had to deal with different game scenarios during these Olympic Games. They have been particularly impressive after conceding and have shown patience in matches, sometimes scoring in the late moments or in stoppage time. They have faced opposition reserving their best games for the champions, head coach Montse Tome has been efficient with in-game rotations for players and they look destined to break through to the final against Brazil.

Brazil: The team put in a spirited performance in the quarter-final against France. They had to do without long-time Brazilian legend Marta during the knockout rounds to eliminate the tournament hosts 1-0 on Saturday. Marta is currently serving a two-match ban with a red card for a blow to the head during the final group match against Spain. The team will likely continue to use that as motivation during the knockouts, but they will need to convert their chances against a Spanish side that is comfortable in long stretches controlling the ball.

Prediction

A repeat of a group match could provide additional adjustments for both teams, but form and experience will be in the Europeans’ favor in this match. Choose: Spain 3, Brazil 1
