Taal Volcano releases Vog, health warnings issued

Taal volcano has been observed releasing volcanic smog or vog over the past 24 hours, prompting the health agency to issue warnings.

Vog is a mixture of sulfur dioxide and other gases that combine with atmospheric oxygen, moisture, dust and sunlight, resulting in a “hazy mixture” that reduces visibility in affected areas, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology ( PHIVOLCS).

The Department of Health (DOH) has issued health warnings for the affected areas, mainly Batangas, as vog can lead to various irritations.

“If you inhale the airways, it depends on the consent or the treatment. (It may cause irritation to the eyes, throat and respiratory tract, which may become severe depending on the concentration or duration of exposure). This is evident from a health advisory from the DOH.

Meanwhile, no volcanic earthquakes and phreatic explosions have been recorded in the past 24 hours, but they remain possible hazards as Taal Volcano remains at alert level 1, according to PHIVOLCS.

PHIVOLCS reminded that entering Taal Volcano Island (Permanent Danger Zone or PDZ) and flying aircraft near the volcano is strictly prohibited as the volcano is still in a state of low unrest. – Edg Adrian A. Eva
