The Air Jordan: a legacy of innovation and style

Michael Jordan’s 1985 game-worn Air Jordan 1 sneaker

Like all variants of the Air Jordan, the Air Jordan 4 RM “Black/Light Bone” has its origins in the Air Jordan 1, which was first produced in November 1984 for basketball legend, Michael Jordan during his time with the Chicago Bulls. At the time, Converse was the official shoe of the NBA, so Air Jordan was not quickly embraced. On April 1, 1985, the Air Jordan was officially released to the public. The iconic shoes were designed for Nike by Peter Moore, Tinker HatfieldAnd Bruce Kilgore. The term “Air Jordan” was coined by Michael Jordan’s agent, David Falk who saw it as a nod to the air in the soles of Nike shoes and Jordan’s ability to play basketball in the “air.”

Legend has it that the NBA banned the first version of Michael’s Jordans, claiming they violated the league’s rules. At the time, sneakers worn had to be mostly white and reflect the colors of the team jersey. Jordan was reportedly fined $5,000 for each game he wore the banned Air Jordan 1 sneakers, and Nike paid the fines, happy to capitalize on the publicity. “Nike’s expectation when we signed the deal was that they hoped to sell $3 million worth of Air Jordans by the end of the fourth year,” says Falk in an interview. “In the first year we sold $126 million.”

In 1989, Nike introduced the Air Jordan 4, a shoe that would become a classic in its own right. It was by designby Tinker Hatfield and featured a sleek, streamlined silhouette and a variety of innovative technologies, making it a favorite among basketball players and sneakerheads alike. The shoe’s popularity was further increased by its association with Michael Jordan, who wore it in some of his most memorable games, including the iconic ‘Shot’ in the 1989 NBA playoffs. The Air Jordan 1 was the first shoe that bore Michael Jordan’s name and immediately captured the imagination of sneaker enthusiasts around the world. The shoe became an indispensable status symbol in the late ’80s and ’90s and is still a street style item. Its success paved the way for the entire Air Jordan line, which has since grown to include dozens of models, each with its unique style and heritage. Today, the Air Jordan 1 is one of the most iconic sneakers of all time, with countless reissues and collaborations continuing to increase its popularity.
