The CNN political commentator was 58

Alice Stewart, a CNN political commentator and veteran political consultant who worked on several Republican presidential campaigns, has died. She was 58.

Stewart’s body was found outside early Saturday morning in a northern Virginia neighborhood, CNN reported. Law enforcement officials told the cable news channel that foul play is not suspected and that it is a medical emergency.

“Alice was a very dear friend and colleague to all of us at CNN,” Mark Thompson, the network’s CEO, said in an email to staff on Saturday. “A political veteran and Emmy Award-winning journalist who brought an incomparable spark to CNN’s reporting, known across our bureaus not only for her political savvy but also for her unwavering kindness. Our hearts are heavy as we mourn such an extraordinary loss.”

Stewart joined CNN as a political commentator ahead of the 2016 election. She also co-hosted the podcast “Hot Mics From Left to Right” with fellow CNN commentator Maria Cardona.

Stewart began her career as a local reporter and producer in her home state of Georgia. She moved to Little Rock, Ark., to become a news anchor, later serving as communications director in the office of then-Arkanas Gov. Mike Huckabee. In 2008, she took on a similar role during Huckabee’s presidential run.

Stewart went on to serve as communications director for other political campaigns, including former Minnesota Rep.’s 2012 presidential bids. Michele Bachmann and then former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. She also served as the communications director for Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s 2016 campaign.
