The next Xbox could potentially be compatible with PC stores

Microsoft may be considering opening the next Xbox-to-PC game stores. It’s a move that would help the company narrow the gap between its Xbox console and gaming PCs. Which is happening lately to some extent thanks to initiatives like Xbox Game Pass. However, the vision for the future of Xbox will potentially go much further than this. A recent report from The Verge highlights hints from Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer that suggest the company is planning a major change in the way Xbox operates in the future.

This shift focuses on opening up the Xbox platform and allowing Xbox console owners to essentially play PC games. Like the one from The Verge Tom Warren It feels like Microsoft is working to “combine the best parts of Windows and Xbox for its next-generation console.” Microsoft has not yet confirmed how this will take shape. However, it has made some comments that may give players an idea of what Microsoft is considering.

In a recent interview with Polygon from late March, Spencer said he wants PC game stores like the Epic Games Store and others on Xbox consoles. It’s a tall order that ultimately benefits the player who owns an Xbox. But again, it’s still a process that takes no small amount of effort.

Bringing PC game stores to Xbox requires PC game compatibility

This will be the first hurdle for Microsoft to make this vision a reality. Before PC game stores like the Epic Games Store can reach Xbox, those PC games must work on Xbox. How would Microsoft make this all come together? That is still unclear. Of course, Microsoft hasn’t announced any official plans. But the closest approximation of what Microsoft could take inspiration from is the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck runs on SteamOS, based on Linux. To make all those Steam games work, Valve implemented Proton, a compatibility layer, so that Windows games would work on the Linux-based system.

Microsoft could do something like this for its next Xbox console. And if it were, it would certainly make things a lot easier when it comes to transferring PC game stores. Spencer has been vocal in the past about his thoughts on platform exclusivity and ways to move away from it. If we could find a way to open up the Xbox console to PC game stores, we could go a long way.
