Ty Burrell Comedy Pilot 'Forgive and Forget' Not Moving Forward at ABC

Ty Burrell is not returning to ABC yet.

Variety has learned that the comedy pilot “Forgive and Forget,” in which Burrell starred and served as executive producer, will not move forward at the broadcast network.

The multi-cam project was originally commissioned for testing at ABC in March. No castings other than Burrell’s were announced. The official logline states that the show would follow the “eternal life of party Hank (Burrell). After an unexpected diagnosis, Hank reconnects with his responsible adult son Ben, hoping to make new memories together.”

Eugene Garcia-Cross was the writer and executive producer of the pilot, while Robin Shorr did the showrunning and executive produced. Burrell executive produced under his Desert Whale Productions banner. 20th Television was the studio.

Burrell, of course, is known for playing Phil Dunphy on ABC’s hit sitcom “Modern Family” for 11 seasons and 250 episodes. He won Emmys in the supporting comedy actor category for the show in 2011 and 2014, and was nominated eight times in a row.

Had “Forgive and Forget” gone to series, Burrell would have been the second former ABC star to return in a new multi-cam comedy. ABC previously announced that the Tim Allen-led series ‘Shifting Gears’ has been greenlit. Allen stars in that series alongside “2 Broke Girls” alum Kat Dennings.

As it stands, ABC currently has few scripted comedies on its roster. The popular single-cam show “Abbott Elementary” returns for its fourth season on October 9, while the seventh and final season of “The Conners” is expected to end mid-season.
