University of Maryland professor named 2024 IFT Fellow

Catherine (Chengchu) Liu, PhD, a leading figure in food science and a tenured professor at the University of Maryland, has been recognized by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) as an IFT Fellow for 2024. This honor is awarded to individuals who have achieved exceptional career achievements and contributions to the science of nutrition.

Dr. Liu’s journey to becoming an IFT Fellow has been filled with academic and professional achievements. With a career that has included positions at esteemed institutions such as the FDA’s Gulf Coast Seafood Laboratory, Oregon State University, and Shanghai University, she has made a significant impact in the field of food science. At the University of Maryland, she directs the Maryland Sea Grant Technology Extension Program, where she transfers her knowledge to students and professionals from around the world.

The recognition as an IFT Fellow underscores Liu’s commitment to excellence and leadership in the field of food science. Her selection to the IFT Fellows class of 2024 recognizes her service to the Institute of Food Technologists and her critical contributions to the advancement of food science.

In addition to her academic endeavors, Liu’s professional journey is marked by numerous achievements. She holds five patents, has edited/co-edited nine books, co-authored 26 book chapters, and has published 88 peer-reviewed articles. Liu’s influence extends beyond academia, as she has been actively involved in several professional organizations and advisory committees.

Liu expressed her gratitude upon receiving this esteemed recognition, saying, “I am truly honored and humbled to have been selected as part of the elite group of IFT Fellows.”

The IFT Fellows 2024 celebration will take place at the Fellows Recognition Forum during the IFT FIRST: Annual Event and Expo, scheduled for July 14-17, 2024 in Chicago, IL. This year, only 10 of the more than 11,000 IFT members have been awarded the prestigious title of IFT Fellow.
