What to watch on the final weekend of Serie A: Champions League and relegation races still to be played

The 2023/24 Serie A season comes to an end this weekend, and despite that, many clubs are still in the race for one European spot and also to avoid relegation. Let’s take a closer look at what to look out for in the final 48 hours of Italian football.

European breed

Inter, AC Milan, Juventus, Bologna and Atalanta have all qualified for a Champions League spot, but Daniele De Rossi’s AS Roma can still dream of a place in the major European tournament, but will be dependent on Atalanta, the team that just won UEFA Europe. League final against Bayer Leverkusen and automatically qualified for the Champions League. If Atalanta finishes fifth, Serie A can qualify for the competition with six teams. But if Atalanta finishes third or fourth (they also have one match left after this weekend), AS Roma will play in the Europa League next season. Lazio, Fiorentina, Torino and Napoli are also keeping an eye on what happens as their European qualification could be affected by Atalanta’s results in their remaining two games of the season.

Relegation race

Although Salernitana and Sassuolo have already been officially relegated, three teams are still fighting to avoid the second division. Frosinone, Udinese and Empoli are racing until the last second of the season after both Verona and Cagliari avoided relegation last week. Empoli will host AS Roma for their final home game of the season, while Frosinone will play directly against Udinese in what is likely to be one of the most dramatic games of the weekend.
